 2023 Preview 


       Houston Academy completed the 2022 season with a 10-1 record. The Raiders cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Houston Academy captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 8-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Raiders since the 2013 season. Houston Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mobile Christian by a score of 30-3.

       The Raiders won as many games as in any season since 2006.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Houston Academy ranked 6th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.3 points a game.

       Since 2010, Houston Academy has gone a combined 63-70. Their 47.4% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Houston Academy has managed to compile a record of 151-113. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 3A and 109th in the AHSAA.




       The Raiders are led by head coach Eddie Brundidge who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-6 over the past two seasons at Houston Academy. Under his direction the Raiders have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Brundidge. Over the course of his career, Coach Brundidge's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won one region championship.

       What a turn around for the Raiders in 2022! With a returning QB they may be back for more this fall.

       The Raiders enter the 2023 season riding a 10 game regular season winning streak. Houston Academy has won 9 consecutive region games.

       The Raiders should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

      Junior QB Kaydn Mitchell will be returning after completing 79 of 112 passes for 1,625 yards last season along with 32 touchdowns.

       The Raiders open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Wicksburg on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Wicksburg Panthers finished with an overall record of 6-6 and in third place in Class 2A region two. The Panthers lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to B.B. Comer by a score of 22-14.

       Houston Academy and Wicksburg have met a total of 47 times on the football field. The Raiders have a 26-21-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Houston Academy winning by a score of 28-0.

       Houston Academy lost 3A All-State  kicker Lucius Renshaw to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates receiver Will Wells, defensive lineman Ethan Coachman and running back Jeb Daughtry.
